What is diplomatic immunity? Diplomatic immunity is a form of legal immunity which generally makes diplomats immune from being arrested, searched or prosecuted under a country’s laws. Immunity granted to diplomats by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 is a privilege given by independent states who allow diplomats from foreign states to enter their own territory. Its own representatives abroad are in a sense hostages who may on a basis of reciprocity suffer if it violates the rules of diplomatic immunity, or may be penalized even for minor restrictions regarding privileges or protocol.
